Background of the Study: Sexual assault is a serious crime with devastating physical, emotional, and psychological consequences for victims. In Zamfara State, sexual assault cases have become an increasing concern, with many victims requiring immediate medical attention and legal documentation to ensure justice (Abubakar et al., 2023). Nurses play a crucial role in the medical and legal processes related to sexual assault cases, particularly in collecting and documenting evidence, providing medical care, and supporting victims throughout the process.
Nurses involved in sexual assault cases are often the first healthcare professionals to encounter victims and are responsible for preserving forensic evidence, conducting thorough examinations, and providing documentation that can be used in legal proceedings. However, the quality of evidence collection and documentation can vary based on the nurse's training, experience, and knowledge of forensic nursing principles (Bates et al., 2024). This study aims to evaluate the impact of nurses' involvement in evidence collection and documentation in sexual assault cases in Zamfara State hospitals, focusing on their role in ensuring justice for victims and improving the legal process.
Statement of the Problem: Sexual assault victims in Zamfara State often face challenges related to the collection and documentation of forensic evidence, which is critical for legal proceedings. Nurses play a key role in this process, but the adequacy of their training and the effectiveness of their practices have not been fully explored. This study seeks to examine the role of nurses in evidence collection and documentation in sexual assault cases and assess how their involvement influences the legal outcomes in Zamfara State.
