Background of the Study: Sexual assault is a serious crime with devastating physical, emotional, and psychological consequences for victims. In Zamfara State, sexual assault cases have become an increasing concern, with many victims requiring immediate medical attention and legal documentation to ensure justice (Abubakar et al., 2023). Nurses play a crucial role in the medical and legal processes related to sexual assault cases, particularly in collecting and documenting evidence, providing medical care, and supporting victims throughout the process.

Nurses involved in sexual assault cases are often the first healthcare professionals to encounter victims and are responsible for preserving forensic evidence, conducting thorough examinations, and providing documentation that can be used in legal proceedings. However, the quality of evidence collection and documentation can vary based on the nurse's training, experience, and knowledge of forensic nursing principles (Bates et al., 2024). This study aims to evaluate the impact of nurses' involvement in evidence collection and documentation in sexual assault cases in Zamfara State hospitals, focusing on their role in ensuring justice for victims and improving the legal process.

Statement of the Problem: Sexual assault victims in Zamfara State often face challenges related to the collection and documentation of forensic evidence, which is critical for legal proceedings. Nurses play a key role in this process, but the adequacy of their training and the effectiveness of their practices have not been fully explored. This study seeks to examine the role of nurses in evidence collection and documentation in sexual assault cases and assess how their involvement influences the legal outcomes in Zamfara State.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the role of nurses in evidence collection and documentation in sexual assault cases in Zamfara State hospitals.
  2. To evaluate the impact of nurse-collected evidence on the legal outcomes of sexual assault cases.
  3. To identify gaps in nurses' knowledge and practices regarding forensic evidence collection in sexual assault cases.

Research Questions:

  1. What role do nurses play in evidence collection and documentation in sexual assault cases in Zamfara State hospitals?
  2. How does nurse-collected evidence influence the legal outcomes of sexual assault cases in Zamfara State?
  3. What gaps exist in nurses' knowledge and practices related to forensic evidence collection in sexual assault cases?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurses' involvement in evidence collection and documentation significantly improves the legal outcomes of sexual assault cases in Zamfara State.
  2. Nurses with specialized training in forensic nursing produce higher-quality evidence in sexual assault cases.
  3. Lack of proper training in forensic evidence collection negatively impacts the quality of documentation and legal proceedings in sexual assault cases.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on the role of nurses in evidence collection and documentation in sexual assault cases in Zamfara State hospitals. Limitations may include potential biases in reporting due to the sensitive nature of sexual assault cases and challenges in accessing complete data from healthcare facilities and law enforcement agencies.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Forensic nursing: A specialized field of nursing that involves the application of nursing science to criminal justice, including evidence collection, documentation, and victim support in legal cases.
  • Evidence collection: The process of gathering physical, biological, and testimonial evidence related to a crime, such as sexual assault, to support legal proceedings.
  • Sexual assault: A criminal act involving any form of non-consensual sexual activity, including physical force, threats, or manipulation.
